Questions about Magento 1 to OpenMage Migration

What exactly is OpenMage?
OpenMage LTS is the community-maintained fork of Magento 1.9. When Adobe ended Magento 1 support in June 2020, the OpenMage project took over the codebase and has shipped security patches, bug fixes, PHP 7 and PHP 8 compatibility, and performance work ever since. It is a drop-in replacement: same database, same theme system, same extension format, same admin.
Should I migrate to OpenMage or straight to Magento 2?
They solve different problems. OpenMage keeps your existing store safe and maintained for a few thousand dollars in weeks. Magento 2 (or Hyvä on top of it) is a full replatform: new theme, new extensions, new integrations, typically five figures and months of work. Many of my clients do both: OpenMage now to stop the security bleeding, then a planned Magento 2 move when budget and timing are right. I offer both services, so the advice you get is not biased toward the bigger project.
Will my extensions and custom theme keep working?
Most Magento 1 extensions run on OpenMage unchanged, because OpenMage keeps the Magento 1 module format. What usually needs work is PHP compatibility: modules written for PHP 5.6 can throw deprecation errors on PHP 8. The pre-migration audit lists every module with its risk level, and patching those is part of the fixed quote, not an extra.
How long does a Magento 1 to OpenMage migration take?
Two to three weeks for a typical store: audit, staging build, compatibility fixes, launch. Heavily customised stores with dozens of local modules can take four. The live store keeps trading the whole time; the only downtime is the final switch, usually under 15 minutes in a low-traffic window.
Is it safe to keep taking card payments on Magento 1 today?
On stock, unpatched Magento 1: no. It has known exploited vulnerabilities (card-skimming attacks against abandoned Magento 1 stores are well documented) and an unmaintained platform is hard to defend in a PCI DSS assessment. On OpenMage with current patches, a maintained PHP version, and a hardened server, you are in a defensible position again. That gap is the main reason this migration exists.
What happens to my SEO and URLs?
Nothing changes by default. OpenMage uses the same URL rewrite system and the same database, so category, product, and CMS URLs stay identical. As part of launch QA I crawl the staging store against the live sitemap and verify status codes, canonicals, and meta data match before the switch.
